TABLE FOR TWELVE

8 CITIES. 8 DINNERS. COUNTLESS CONVERSATIONS.

The Canada Council for the Arts has awarded 5468796 Architecture the $50,000 Professional Prix de Rome prize for their project Table for 12, which will allow hosts from eight cities to set the table for informal conversations about architecture.

The objective of 5468796’s winning project is to research cities around the world with a prominent design culture and to gain a deeper understanding of the catalysts that have built a strong commitment to architecture. At the end of the research period, 5468796 will disseminate the information with the hope that they and others will use it to expand architectural design culture in Canada and beyond.

Bill Galloway | Director, frontofficetokyo & Assistant Professor, Keio University

Graduated in 2001 with M.Arch from the University of Manitoba and a PhD in urban planning from the University of Tokyo in 2008, Bill is currently the Director of frontofficetokyo in Japan and a Project Assistant Professor at Keio University.

Frontoffice is a planning and design office based in Tokyo with a predilection for collaboration and exploration of fields outside of traditional architectural practice. Founded in 2006 by partners Koen Klinkers and Bill Galloway, the group is particularly interested in using the conflicting needs of economics, sustainability, and construction to find new ways to live in the contemporary city. Awards include Wallpaper’s World’s Hottest New Architects in 2008 and the 2012 International Architecture Award for their recent project, HA Tower.

Bill + 546:

Bill Galloway graduated with Sasa and Johanna from the Masters Program at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture in 2001. He went on to complete a PhD in urban planning and architecture at the University of Tokyo. He ended up staying in Japan and establishing his practice, frontofficetokyo, but the initial connection has not been lost. Bill recently returned to Winnipeg where he presented a lecture at the FAUM, and last year he interviewed 546 for an Upstarts feature on Archinect.
