The Canada Council for the Arts has awarded 5468796 Architecture the $50,000 Professional Prix de Rome prize for their project Table for 12, which will allow hosts from eight cities to set the table for informal conversations about architecture.

The objective of 5468796’s winning project is to research cities around the world with a prominent design culture and to gain a deeper understanding of the catalysts that have built a strong commitment to architecture. At the end of the research period, 5468796 will disseminate the information with the hope that they and others will use it to expand architectural design culture in Canada and beyond.

Michael Heenan is CEO and Principal of Allen Jack+Cottier Architects (AJ+C), a leading Australian architectural practice with offices in Sydney, Brisbane and Beijing. Michael is presently designing a number of new cities with disruptive environmental strategies where urbanity and ecology share equal status. Michael, who has been a judge at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in 2010, 2011, 2012 and upcoming in 2013 and also won the Best Sports Building at WAF in 2009, has helped the practice become one of the most recognized in Australia.

Michael + 546:

We first met Michael at the 2011 World Architecture Festival in Barcelona, where he was a jury member when we presented Centre Village (shortlisted in the Housing Category). We met again in August 2012 in the Giardini Grounds at the Venice Biennale in Architecture. Our last meeting with Michael occurred in October 2012 at the WAF in Singapore, where he was also a jury member when we presented Bloc_10.
