The Canada Council for the Arts has awarded 5468796 Architecture the $50,000 Professional Prix de Rome prize for their project Table for 12, which will allow hosts from eight cities to set the table for informal conversations about architecture.

The objective of 5468796’s winning project is to research cities around the world with a prominent design culture and to gain a deeper understanding of the catalysts that have built a strong commitment to architecture. At the end of the research period, 5468796 will disseminate the information with the hope that they and others will use it to expand architectural design culture in Canada and beyond.

Table talk | an introduction

When I heard the news from the Canada Council for the Arts that we received the Prix de Rome in Architecture, I was in a conference in New York. I bolted out of the auditorium to perform what must have looked incredibly ridiculous: a happy-dance in the break out space combined with some excited OMGs over the phone. Brigitte Desrochers, the Program Officer for Architecture at the other end of the line, was laughing while having to keep convincing me that she wasn’t joking. My next call was to the office, telling everyone to pack their bags—we could now realize our hope to travel the world in search of catalysts, creators and policies that build, perpetuate and support architecture culture.

It is a dream to have this opportunity. When we started 5468796 Architecture in 2007, Winnipeg was a different place...
